Acute Soft Head Syndrome in Sickle Cell Patients: First Reported Cases in the Caribbean

Introduction

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hemoglobinopathy with rising prevalence, particularly
in the Caribbean. It commonly causes anemia, vaso-occlusive crises, and acute chest syndrome. A
rare but underrecognized complication is Acute Soft Head Syndrome (ASHS)—a subgaleal
hematoma due to blood extravasation beneath the galeal aponeurosis.

Conclusion

These are the first Caribbean reports of ASHS, supporting conservative management
and highlighting the need for regional clinical awareness.
