Case Report: Maternal Covid-19 Death
Introduction
SARS-CoV-2 has spread across the globe affecting people on every continent
except Antarctica since 2019.
Problem highlighted: We present a case highlighting lung changes in a maternal patient with
Covid 19..
Case
A female patient 40 years of age with a gestational age of approximately
23 weeks who had an RDT-positive COVID-19 result. Microscopically the lung changes
observed confirmed that indeed the patient had a past medical history of bronchial asthma
however, she was not in crisis at the time of death due to the absence of mucus plugs or
eosinophilic inflammation of the walls. Her immediate causes of death were multi-organ
failure and microvascular thrombosis.
Outcome: This case highlights the devastating effects of COVID-19, particularly in a patient
with underlying respiratory disease and during pregnancy. The combination of multi-organ
failure, severe lung damage, and kidney injury, compounded by chronic health issues,
created a situation where the patient’s body could not withstand the systemic impact of the
infection, leading to a fatal outcome. This case underscores the importance of recognizing
and managing COVID-19 in high-risk populations, including those with chronic respiratory
conditions and pregnant women.
