Successful Treatment of Infantile Haemangiomas With Propranolol in Guyana: Policyimplications
Introduction
Infantile haemangiomas are the most common vascular tumors in children
under 1 year. They require treatment when present in high-risk areas to prevent
complications. Propranolol has been the mainstay treatment due to its effectiveness and
safety profile.
Problem highlighted by the cases: Absence of a treatment protocol and documented
treatment of infantile haemangiomas with propranolol in Guyana.
Case presentation: Five high-risk cases, (3 males, 2 females), of superficial, mixed and deep
infantile haemangiomas widely distributed on the scalp, face, upper lip, back, forearm, thigh,
and scrotum with an average age of 4.7 months (range 1-7), were treated with propranolol 2.5
mg/kg for periods ranging from 4-14 months. Complete resolution of all lesions except one
achieved after treatment. One case developed a rare side effect and was successfully switched
to atenolol.
Outcome: Propranolol was successful in treating infantile haemangiomas in Guyana and
must be included in any treatment protocol.
